Facing History & Ourselves is a global education non-profit organization that challenges teachers and students to use lessons of history to stand up to bigotry and hate.

The Senior Curriculum Developer, District Partnerships uses Facing History’s pedagogy as a framework to envision effective classroom instruction and write clear and accessible curriculum materials to guide teachers, school leaders, and district staff in implementing the content.

Who We Are: Facing History’s educational content is informed by a unique pedagogical model that helps students explore questions of identity, human behavior, prejudice, and civic responsibility, and make the essential connection between history and the moral choices they confront in their own lives today. We currently apply this model to explore case studies of pivotal historical moments such as the Holocaust and the Reconstruction Era following the American Civil War, as well as rich works of literature such as Brown Girl Dreaming.

Who You Are: You are a writer, teacher, and learner at heart, who is passionate about our mission and excited to develop and adapt content for the wide range of topics that comprise our social studies and English language arts editorial portfolio. You have at least 5-7 years of experience writing and adapting curriculum, including lesson plans, units, and standards alignment, for school and district audiences that cover a wide range of topics. The Sr. Curriculum Developer will join a collaborative team whose roles include writers, editors, production coordinators, supervisors, and strategists.

The successful candidate will have recent experience writing and adapting curriculum materials for adolescents with diverse learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Develop digital- and print-based curriculum for middle and high school teachers and students, including standards-aligned lessons, units, curriculum maps, pacing guides, and Google slides that will be delivered as part of Facing History’s district curriculum partnership initiative.

  • Develop teacher and school-facing documents detailing Facing History’s approach to instructional topics, that address contractual needs and policy requirements

  • As part of the district partnership team, meet with internal and external stakeholders to plan, recommend, and eventually develop curriculum for district partnership contracts.

  • Become an expert in Facing History’s unique pedagogical model and apply it to the design of curriculum resources.

  • Research, write, and summarize complex historical and literary content to provide context teachers need to effectively implement lessons, units, text sets and inquiries, as needed.

  • Demonstrate knowledge and expertise in best practices in the teaching, pedagogy, and assessment of social studies (ELA experience is a plus), and ensure those practices are reflected as appropriate in Facing History content.

  • Work with Facing History Program Staff, and District Partnership teams to plan webinars, professional learning, and other experiences that support program delivery staff with the implementation of curriculum resources.

  • Excellent writing skills, eagerness to incorporate feedback from editors, and an ability to persist in the writing process until drafts are complete and publishable.

  • Strong research skills, and an ability to identify historical, literary, and multimedia sources that are intellectually and emotionally appropriate and engaging for adolescents.

  • Expertise in culturally responsive teaching, teaching students who speak languages other than English, and social emotional learning.

  • Expertise in methods of differentiating instruction in middle and high school history, social studies, and/or ELAclassrooms.

  • Curiosity and eagerness for continuous learning about teaching and learning in the humanities.

  • Other related duties as required by position.

Essential Skills and Qualities:

We take an equitable and holistic screening approach. If you feel you have demonstrated experience and expertise relevant to perform this role, please don’t hesitate to apply!

  • Generally requires a Bachelor’s degree. Additional relevant experience may substitute for a degree.
