Convent of the Sacred Heart is New York City's oldest independent school for girls. Position:  Controller
Reports to:  Chief Administrative Officer
FLSA: Exempt Full-time
Salary Range: $150,000 - $200,000 annually

The controller is a financial leadership position who works with a team of five employees in the business office, with the responsibility of assisting in the management and monitoring of the school’s business practices and finances. The ideal candidate will have meticulous attention to detail, be adaptable, even tempered, and an effective communicator with extensive knowledge and experience in the administration of not-for-profit accounting principles and practices. In addition, they will need to have demonstrated ability to manage direct reports. This individual will have frequent interaction with the Human Resources Director, Director of Institutional Advancement, Director of Admissions, Director of Technology and Director of Operations; and occasional interaction with the Head of School, Division Heads, and the Audit, Finance and Investment Committees of the Board of Trustees; and seasonal interaction with external auditors. The expectation is that the Controller will work with these groups and individuals to ensure accurate, efficient and effective implementation of financial procedures and reporting. The Controller is a steward of the school’s financial resources and is expected to always be guided by the legal requirements of the industry, principles of GAAP accounting, best ethical practices and the goals and criteria of the schools of the Sacred Heart.

The ideal candidate should have demonstrated ability to meet the following responsibilities:

Responsibilities:
  • Assign and supervise the work of those responsible for Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, and Payroll/Employee Benefits.
  • Assist with tuition collection and interact with families as needed.
  • Maintain the General Ledger and procedures to ensure adherence to generally accepted accounting practices and recordkeeping.
  • Review and monitor the completeness and accuracy of financial transaction records.
  • Coordinate monthly financial close activities/prepare and disseminate monthly reports, account reconciliations and periodic financial statements.
  • Perform monthly reconciliations of bank and investment account activity.
  • Record investment transactions and carry out instructions of the Board Investment Committee.
  • Ensure adherence to school purchasing policies and procedures.
  • Perform special projects and analyses as required.
  • Coordinate external and internal audit activities.
  • Plan and execute programs to maintain and enhance staff proficiencies.
  • Maintain up-to-date accounting policy and procedure documentation.
  • Other duties as assigned


Requisite Skills and Qualifications:

  • High Ethical Standards
  • Undergraduate college degree (Finance or Accounting)
  • Graduate degree and/or CPA preferable
  • Minimum 8 years general accounting or public accounting experience (minimum 2 years as Accounting Manager, Controller or Assistant Controller) – not-for-profit experience required, Independent School Experience preferred
  • Knowledge of GAAP accounting
  • Ability to effectively supervise, train and motivate staff, prioritize and delegate workload assignments, and monitor and report operational performance
  • Excel Suite; proficiency in Blackbaud, and some working knowledge of smart tuition and ADP preferred.
