Position Highlights

The College of Information Science at the University of Arizona seeks multiple tenure-track Assistant and Associate Professors who conduct research in the multidisciplinary fields of science of science, scholarly communication, and science and technology policy. Broadly construed, these research areas include innovation studies, scientific collaboration studies, biblio/sciento/infometrics, knowledge infrastructures, open science, data governance, policy impact research and more.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • The faculty member will teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels and contribute to mentoring students, including those from underrepresented backgrounds. The faculty member will also participate in outreach and contribute to departmental, college and university service. In these and other ways, the faculty member will help to develop innovative approaches to enhancing student engagement, increasing diversity and expanding collaborations with community and business partners.
  • Examples of research areas of interest to the College of Information Science include, but are not limited to:
    • Impacts of science communication on the public and within media ecosystems
    • Scholarly communication patterns, practices, norms and trends
    • Theories of scientific innovation, collaboration and communication
    • The circulation of, and countermeasures for, science misinformation/disinformation
    • Open science policy, practice, incentives, obstacles and adoption
    • Scientific data curation policy, practice and impact
    • Inequality and knowledge production
  • Collaboration practices in the sciences
  • Domain” informatics research – e.g., biodiversity informatics, social informatics, geoinformatics, health informatics – grounded in information science methods and theories
  • Successful candidates will demonstrate a strong research agenda, the ability to thrive in an interdisciplinary department, the ability to teach in multiple modalities and levels (e.g., both undergraduate and graduate) and skill in mentoring students, including those from underrepresented backgrounds. Successful candidates will ideally bring a record of working on grant-funded teams, and/or will demonstrate promise for obtaining grants in the future. The position is an on campus (in-person) faculty post, expected to begin in August 2025.

The College of Information Science

The College of Information Science explores the intersections of people, data and technology through interdisciplinary academic programs and research. Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in information studies or closely related field
  • Evidence of innovative, impactful and creative scholarly agenda in the area of science of science (broadly defined), as indicated by research statement and publication history, appropriate to career stage and faculty rank.
  • Record of teaching effectiveness as indicated by teaching statement, awards and/or teaching experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and record of working in a diverse and interdisciplinary research environment


Preferred Qualifications

  • History of obtaining extramural funding for research, or evidence of potential to obtain research funding in the future.
  • Evidence of, or demonstrated potential for, positive mentoring experiences with undergraduate or graduate students.
